projectsriver=Sarawak River Salinity Barrier
The water supply intakes to Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak, Malaysia, are located on the Sarawak River near the upper end of tidal influence. Operation of a downstream barrier has increased upstream salinity levels, which can lead to the drawing of saline water into the intakes during low flow periods. A salinity barrier has been designed by Geotech Consulting Ltd to prevent this occurrence. Although a low structure with 1.5m head across it, the design has had to allow for 8m submergence in floods and rock of variable depth and quality below the site. A circular sheet pile structure is being used to facilitate construction without large temporary works. The weir incorporates both a portage ramp and lock for river navigation. Geotech Consulting has done the overall layout and detailed design of the weir and abutments and a local consultant is responsible for the navigation structures, tender and contract work.
