projectslifelines=Assessment of the likely impacts of earthquake hazards on lifeline services to all of the Canterbury and West Coast Districts
Earthquakes result in a wide range of impacts that affect both the landscape and the built environment as we have seen in the Canterbury Earthquake of 4th September 2010. Local authorities must consider the potential impacts of earthquakes on the key lifelines in their district such as water supply, sewer systems, and the local road network. We have described and evaluated the potential seismic sources for each of the Canterbury and West Coast District Councils listed above including research on the impacts of historical earthquakes in these areas. Combining this information we have prepared realistic and defensible earthquake scenarios which can be used by the local authorities to determine what parts of their lifeline network may be vulnerable and what options are available to mitigate potential impacts.
